The USCIRF – the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom released its 2020 annual report on 28th April 2020. The USCIRF annual report includes the list of 14 countries that have been listed as Country of Particular Concern are Myanmar, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan these were the 9 countries which were flagged last year in the month of December along with these 9 countries, they have listed India, Nigeria, Russia, Syria, and Vietnam countries on 28th April 2020 under CPC. Coming to the USCIRF that claims to monitor the religious freedom across the world, in their 2020 annual report, they added India under the list of CPC countries, the report on India was rejected by two of its own commissioners. These type of comments against India are not new but this time the USCIRF reached the next level in including India in the list of CPC countries.
Commissioner Gary L Bauer:
I must dissent from the decision of my fellow Commissioners to recommend India, the world’s largest democracy, for designation as a ‘country of particular concern’, or CPC, placing India in a gallery of rogue nations in which it does not belong,” Commissioner Gary L Bauer wrote in his dissent note.
Commissioner Tenzin Dorjee:
“India does not belong to the same category as authoritarian regimes like China and North Korea. The USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the President and the leadership of both political parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
